Vancouver is the county seat, and the area's largest city. It's home to historic sites, museums, antique shopping and other entertainment, making it a great place to start your trip. ___ For educational insight, visit Fort Vancouver, a National Historic Park that explores the growth of commerce, culture and community in the area. Special programs are offered along with permanent artifact and archive collections in the former Army post barracks and among the park's many acres. Included in the park is the Pearson Air Museum, adjacent to the historic Pearson Air Field, the oldest operating airfield in the United States. At the museum, you will learn about the inception of aviation and enter a world of wild barnstormers, experimental aircraft, and aces of World War I and II. For history and art combined, visit the Clark County Historical Museum housed in the 1909 Carnegie Library. The Research Library is home to thousands of books and documents. Ongoing art exhibits include historic photographs and Native American basketry. A new exhibit entitled Expressions of Community: Women Embracing Art, opens Jan 28, 2010. Clark County Historical Museum is located at 1511 Main Street in Vancouver. Old Town Antique Market is a 20,000 sq. ft. mall housed in Vancouver's first J.C. Penney department store building, originally opened in 1922. It resides at 808 Main St.(360) 750-9100, www.oldtownantiquemarket.com. Urban Eccentric is vintage clothing store, offering apparel and accessories from the 1920s to the 1980s. It is located at 2411 Main St., (360) 694-2934. St. Johns Art & Antiques offers an eclectic inventory of antiques and works of art including antique prints, carvings, ceramics and textiles at 10922 NE St. Johns Rd, (360) 573-2580. Old Glory Antique Mall in home to 60 dealers offering items from coins, jewelry and dolls to knives, militaria, silver and anything in between. The mall can be found at 2000 Main St., (360) 906-8823. Uptown Attic is a family owned shop offering an eclectic mix of vintage and antique items such as linens, glass, pottery, furniture, and wrought iron plus a 30-year collection of costume jewelry. There are numerous art galleries and dining spots as well. First Friday Art Walks (Jan 8, Feb 5) are hosted by Vancouver's Downtown association and are the perfect opportunity to explore the colorful downtown area. ____ Some of the musical high notes in Vancouver include: The Vancouver Symphony, which offers classical performances of J.S. Bach, Mozart, Dvorak on Jan. 16 -17. The symphony plays at Skyview's Concert Hall, located at 1300 NW 139th St., Vancouver. For tickets and other information visit www.vancouversymphony.org. The Bravo! Vancouver Concert Series offers Beethoven, Brubeck & The Blues, which is described as "a new genre of 21st century music, classical crossover, which blends both classical jazz music and musicians. The event will be held on Jan. 24 at St. Joseph Church, 400 S. Andresen Road. For details go to www.bravoconcerts.com. ___ One of the biggest attractions in Clark County is the annual Palmer/Wirfs Antique & Collectible Show. This year it happens Jan. 16-17, and offers 400 booths filled with a variety of quality antique and collectible treasures. The show is held in Ridgefield, Wash, at the Clark County Fairgrounds Exhibit Hall. Palmer/Wirfs hosts another event the following weekend, Jan. 23-34, in Puyallup, Wash., about two hours northeast. All show hours are Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Admission is $6 for adults, $3 for children ages 12 to 17.
