Brides and Collectors say "I Do" to Brides Bowls Phoenix, Ariz. - Bride bowls are on the gift list at the Phoenix Antique Market, coming Feb. 13-14, 2010. Buying antiques is not only a great way to accentuate a wedding and create a memorable gift for bridesmaids, but it also offers an original gift for the bride and groom. For many brides, the thought of receiving a wedding gift that is meant for keeping in the family is priceless. That's why brides bowls, or brides baskets, are turning up on couples' gift lists and are becoming one of the most trendy wedding gifts of the time. Weddings have always given themselves to tradition, but in today's world, a gift of legend and history is becoming more cherished these days. In addition to the sentiment behind the gift, brides bowls also come with a big value attached. Most brides bowls purchased today cost around $200-$500 or less, but rarities can go for anywhere from $1,500 to $8,000.
In the turn-of-the-century, Depression Glass makers sold their colored-glass bowls to silver-plate manufacturers. They in turn mounted the bowls in silver frames. Bowls were crimped or fluted, colored and hand-painted. Some of the rare ones have two bowls. The silver-plate manufacturers produced many variations of the basket that included cherubs, leafs or a chariot pulled by horse, as well as more generic types like flutes and etched metal.
The bowls, originally coined "fruit bowls or berry bowls", got their name in the late 1800s when they became the popular wedding gift. From there, they were handed down within the family though generations.
