Besame Mucho: Vintage Beauty with Besame Cosmetics

By Sandra Mendoza -Daly, Editor, DebutanteClothing.com
When Max Factor was the Hollywood "It" boy of glamour and beauty, starlets like Greta Garbo and Marilyn Monroe were made to perfection with the stroke of his brush and a dab of his sponge. Just like cinema, we had a Golden Age of beauty and Besame Cosmetics President and CEO, Gabriela Hernandez, is determined to bring that era back.

Hernandez's passion for vintage cosmetics and the history of make-up is rooted in loving memories of her glamorous grandmother in her native country of Argentina. Hernandez's interest in beauty and glamour, combined with her accomplished work experience in art direction and photography was the basis for the launch of Besame Cosmetics in September 2004.

Through her research, Hernandez realized that some of the most effective cosmetic formulas and designs were lost in time. She discovered that the post World War II era was a period of great renaissance and novelty for the cosmetics business in America. Products reflected a renewed interest in fashion and beauty; they combined functionality with a feminine sense of glamour and romance. Captivated by the products of this era, Hernandez immersed herself in intensive analysis and study.

Inspirational drawings, vintage advertisements and her grandmother's original 1940's lipstick tubes inspired the look of Besame Cosmetics.

"The influence for the design comes from original lines in the 30s and 40s - like Richard Hudnut, DuBarry, Harriet Hubbard Ayer, Hazel Bishop and other pioneers in the field of color cosmetics in the U.S. There are also many European influences in the designs, some Russian motifs and Art Deco touches. Femininity and allure were major considerations for the esthetic of the line, " explained Gabriela.

The Make-up
While there are other products on the market that are heavily influenced by vintage beauty products, Hernandez's extensive historical research gives Besame a unique edge on some of the mass produced products.

"We manufacture true reproductions of designs form the past." She explained. "Our products are items our customers treasure, collect and keep. Besame gives you a piece of history you can use today to re-live the glamour of the past."

Besame products are created with responsible formulas and quality ingredients, are never tested on animals and are completely Paraben free. All ingredients are non-toxic and the products include natural ingredients such as aloe, ginseng, olive oil, green tea, jojoba oil, rose waxes, lavender flower extract and avocado oil, just to name few. Beyond being safe and even good for you, the packaging is stunning. Besame Cosmetics are so rich in pigment, making their lipsticks a perfect choice for that deep, saturated lip so popular in the 1920s through the 1950s. Currently, Besame has two lines - the Besame Classic Collection and the newly released Voluptuous Lip Colour Set.

The Besame Classic Collection
Besame's Classic line features a 1940s inspired collection of metal compacts and lipsticks based on interpretations of designs from the '30s and '40s. The collection includes rouge, lipstick, powder, mascara and pencils. The petite, gold plated items replicate authentic pieces of the period.

Voluptuous Lip Colour
The Art Deco inspired Voluptuous Lip Colour Set was developed over a two-year period. The three-piece set includes a moisture-rich and saturating lipstick in three shades, lip pencil and an ergonomically designed lip brush.

Beyond Business
Although Besame Cosmetics is steeped in vintage influence, the line is not limited to creating a cult following amongst vintage collectors and enthusiasts. Besame has garnered worldwide media attention including mentions in high fashion magazines such as Allure, Glamour, Elle, and the bibles of fashion, Vogue and WWD. In June 2005 Hernandez was awarded the Latinas in Business Award by The National Latina Business Women Association for product manufacturing and earned Best Product at the EX-TRACTS show, a beauty industry trade show in New York. But honors and awards are not the only goals for this entrepreneur. "I want to make a mark of what I am and who I was in the world. I want to contribute something worthwhile through this line and inspire young women to follow their dreams."

Hernandez currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband, son age 16 and daughter age 7.
