Vintage Princess at King Richard's

King Richard's Antique Centers is one of the oldest (and largest) antique mall in Southern California. It opened in 1979 and was owned by Richard Bowlin (not to be confused with the king) and Jim Slevcove. Before that, the building was a citrus packing plant. Now, its 47,000 square feet are filled with a myriad of treasures, from antique religious artifacts to vintage fashion. It is undergone some renovations under the reign of recent owners Chuck and Martha Garcara.

Roxi Lopez, on staff at King Richard's since 2008, lives and works the vintage fairytale.
Her enthusiasm is apparent and she dresses the part, wearing vintage almost every day.

Lopez offers information on jewelry and other vintage fashion items to customers who want only the real thing. "Sometimes I give them (the customer) more information than the dealer," she said. "When the customers come in, they want an actual antique. So it's kind of hard when it's reproduction."

Lopez developed an interest in vintage clothing when, as a child, she saw Greta Garbo in movies. She was fascinated by her pants and stylish shirts. "I love that woman, I thought she was beautiful," Lopez said. "And from there, I just started seeing fashion in a different way."

Though King Richard's doesn't sell clothing from classic Mexican cinema, Lopez was also inspired by styles in that culture as well.

Now 20, Lopez has been collecting vintage clothing since high school. In fact, when it came to wearing dresses and heels, she was unique. "The high school I went to, you wouldn't see girls in dresses or heels," Lopez said. "So then you would have me, with my crazy dresses and my crazy heels, and I used to be a person where I would change my hair color every so often. I had weird hair colors, but the clothing, I guess, made it seem like 'it's okay, she's not one of those crazy girls'."

When it comes to fashion, Lopez said summer dresses from the 40s and 50s, and hats from the 20s and 30s are popular at King Richard's. Other vintage clothing sold there includes vintage jackets, boots, sweaters, Hawaiian shirts, sports jerseys, and t-shirts.

There is also small selection of vintage menswear at the store that includes vintage Hawaiian, Pendleton's, pea coats, and cowboy boots.

The mall recently came fully into the 21st century when they began selling online at www.kingrichardsantiques.com, as well as offering their dealers an electronic sales management system.

King Richards is located at 12301 Whittier Blvd Whittier, CA 90602. Store hours are Monday-Friday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. For more information, call (562) 698-5974.
